Quick start guide

While the platform is packed with advanced features and customization options, this guide outlines a streamlined setup path to get you up and running quickly. We'll walk you through the essentials to demonstrate the immediate impact of Conviso: you’ll initialize your first workspace, import your initial person profiles, and configure your primary messaging channels!

Get started

Upon entering your Conviso Workspace Dashboard, you’ll find a Setup List. While not every item is mandatory, the following steps are required to unlock the full power and functionality of Conviso:

  1. Create an account and a workspace.
  2. Set up the types of messages you want to send on this page, we’ll set up email.
  3. Add people to your workspace. As a part of this guide, you’ll add yourself as a test person.
  4. Start sending messages!

In this guide, you’ll add a test person and send your test person a message, demonstrating how you’ll use your data to automate and personalize messages.

Create your Workspace

Following account creation, you’ll set up your first workspace. Workspaces are the primary organizational units in Conviso, housing your unique datasets and message templates. These are designed to be distinct environments, ensuring that information remains siloed and secure within each individual workspace.

After creating your workspace, you'll land on the Workspace Dashboard where you can manage your data sources, messaging channels, and key settings.

Configure Your Email Channel

While we support multiple messaging channels, email is the most popular and simplest to start with. To begin, choose your primary channel below. You can always add Push, SMS, or Slack later by navigating to Personal Settings > From Addresses to set up a sender email address.

  1. Enter your domain—like example.com
Configure Domain

  1. Enter your From address(es). These are the addresses that your messages will come from.
Configure Sender
  1. Verify and authenticate your domain(s). This involves adding some records to your domain host.

Add a test person to your workspace

To begin your testing, navigate to the People page in your workspace and add a few persons. Adding yourself as a test user is the best way to experiment with Conviso’s campaign features without the risk of reaching your actual users. Later in this guide, we will use this profile to trigger a live segment and automated campaign.

  • Navigate to the People page, click Add People at the top right corner, download the Sample Sheet and open it as this is what you would be needing.

  • You can identify people by either ID or Email. To get started, simply use "1" as the ID and enter your own email address.

  • Fill in the first_name and last_name for your test user, and double-check that the identifier field is also completed. This data will let you test targeting and message personalization. You're welcome to include more custom attributes to explore how they work.

  • Click Proceed, you get to preview the data before finally importing the data.

What is a person in Conviso?

It is helpful to understand exactly what we mean by a "person." In Conviso, you represent a person through data, built upon three essential pillars: identifiers, attributes, and events.

  • IdentifiersThe attributes you use to add, modify, and target people. Each unique identifier value represents an individual person in your workspace.: These are the unique values that distinguish one person from another in your system—such as a database ID or an email address.

  • attributesA key-value pair that you associate with a person or an object, like a person's name the date they were created in your workspace, or a company's billing date. You can use attributes to target people and personalize messages.: These are the specific details you know about a person, such as their name, interests, or demographics.

  • EventsSomething that a person in your workspace did.Events can trigger campaigns, add people to segments, etc. and you can use properties from events to personalize messages.: These are the actions that a person performs. You can use these behavioral signals to trigger campaigns in response to specific activity within your system.

While you can associate other data with a person, such as their relationship to objects (e.g., companies, accounts, etc.) or their mobile devices, the three components you will interact with most often are identifiers, attributes, and events.

Create a campaign and send your person a message

With your first person added and your communication channels configured, you are ready to build a campaign to trigger your first automated message

  1. Go to Campaigns in the left-hand menu, then click Create Campaign at the top right corner of the page.

  2. Filling out these details correctly ensures your campaign is organized, measurable, and sent only to the intended audience.

    • Name and Description: Enter a clear, unique name (e.g., "Welcome Email - New Signups") and a brief summary of the campaign's purpose. As your workspace grows, descriptive names help your team quickly identify different active workflows and their specific goals.

    • Campaign Goal: Select Yes or No depending on if you want a campaign goal or not. Defining a goal allows Conviso to track the success rate of your campaign. It turns your messaging from simple "blasts" into measurable business results.

    • Exit Conditions: Choose when a person should stop receiving messages from this workflow. Most users select "They achieve the goal". This prevents "over-messaging." Once a person does what you asked them to do (like buying a product), these conditions ensure they don't keep receiving reminders to buy that same product.

    • Subscription Preferences: Decide if this message should go only to "All subscribed people" or if it is a critical update that must reach "All subscribed and unsubscribed". This is vital for legal compliance and user experience. Marketing content should generally go only to subscribed individuals, while critical account alerts (like password resets) might require sending to everyone.

Set your trigger

  1. Click the Start Here block on the canvas, click on the dropdown, and choose your trigger type. Triggers determine who enters your campaign and when. In this example, people will trigger your campaign when they join a segment.
  • The Automation Trigger acts as the "spark" that starts the campaign for a specific individual.

  • You must select a trigger type, triggers are often powered by Events, Important dates and Segment.

  4. In the from field, choose one of the Sender addresses you added when you set up email as a message channel. You also need to add a title, and subject line. We added liquidA syntax that supports variables, letting you personalize messages for your audience. For example if you want to reference a person's first name, you might use the variable {{person.first_name}} to personalize the message with your test person’s first name. You can use {{person.<attribute_name>}} to reference any attribute value associated with your audience. You can also create conditions and set fallbacks when attributes don’t exist.
