Triggers, filters, and frequency
A campaign trigger determines who enters your campaign and when they enter.
In addition:
- Filters narrow your entry criteria. People must meet the trigger (and any filters) to enter.
- Frequency controls how often the same person can enter a campaign.
- Exit conditions can automatically remove people when they stop matching the trigger and filters, helping keep your campaign relevant.
Trigger types
Segment
Use a segment trigger to start a campaign when a person enters or leaves a segment.
Segments represent groups of people defined by shared conditions (for example: “New signups”, “Active users”, or “Paying users”). A segment trigger listens for changes in a person’s membership in that group.
You can choose whether the campaign should start when a person enters the segment or leaves it.
Trigger condition
When configuring a segment trigger, you choose one of the following:
-
Enters segment
The campaign is triggered at the moment a person becomes a member of the selected segment. -
Leaves segment
The campaign is triggered at the moment a person no longer matches the segment’s rules.
Frequency
Frequency controls how often the same person is allowed to enter this campaign, even if they enter or leave the segment multiple times.
Available options:
- On every occurrence
- One time
- Once within a period
Filter conditions
Filter conditions let you further narrow who is allowed to enter the campaign, even after the segment trigger fires.
You can filter based on person attributes or segments.
Event
Use an event trigger to start a campaign when a specific event occurs.
Events represent actions a person performs (for example: completing a purchase or creating a project). An event trigger listens for that action and evaluates entry at the moment it happens.
Filter conditions
For event triggers, you can filter based on:
- Person attributes
- Event attributes
Event attribute filters allow you to check whether a specific event property exists, contains a value, or matches a condition before allowing entry.
Important date
Use an important date trigger to start a campaign based on a date stored on a person’s profile.
Important dates are time-based attributes such as a person’s date of birth, subscription start date, or renewal date. This trigger allows you to run campaigns relative to those dates.
Trigger condition
When configuring an important date trigger, you first select a date-based person attribute.
Examples include:
date_of_birthsubscription_start_datetrial_end_date
You then choose when the campaign should trigger relative to that date:
-
On the date
The campaign triggers on the exact calendar date stored in the attribute. -
Before the date
The campaign triggers a specified number of days before the date. -
After the date
The campaign triggers a specified number of days after the date.
If you choose before or after, you can specify how many days before or after the date the campaign should trigger.
Time and timezone
You can select the exact time of day the campaign should trigger, along with the timezone in which that time should be interpreted.
This ensures the campaign starts at the correct local time for your audience.
Filter conditions
Filter conditions work the same way as they do for segment triggers.
You can filter based on:
- Person attributes
- Segment membership
Filters are evaluated at the moment the date-based trigger fires.
Frequency
Frequency controls how often the same person can enter the campaign for recurring dates.
Available options:
-
Monthly
The person can enter the campaign once per month when the date condition matches. -
Yearly
The person can enter the campaign once per year when the date condition matches.
This is especially useful for recurring dates such as birthdays, anniversaries, and subscription renewals.
