Sending Slack Notifications

Slack notifications allow you to send automated messages to Slack channels or direct messages to users within your workspace. This is powerful for internal alerts (e.g., "New Enterprise Lead Signed Up") or customer-facing updates if your users live in Slack.

Currently, Slack notifications are available exclusively via Campaigns.

Setting up Your Slack Bot

Step 1: Create Your App Container

  1. Go to the Slack API Dashboard.
  2. Click the green Create New App button.
  3. Select From scratch.
  4. App Name: Give it a name (e.g., "Conviso Bot").
  5. Pick a workspace: Choose the Slack workspace where you want to use the bot.
  6. Click Create App.

Step 2: Give Your Bot "Permissions" (Scopes)

By default, your bot can't do anything—it can't even see messages. You have to give it specific "Scopes" (permissions):

  1. On the left-hand sidebar, click OAuth & Permissions.
  2. Scroll down to the Scopes section.
  3. Under Bot Token Scopes, click Add an OAuth Scope.
  4. Add these common ones to start:
    • chat:write (Allows the bot to send messages)
    • channels:read (Allows the bot to see a list of public channels)
    • groups:read (Allows the bot to see a list of private channels it has been invited to)
    • im:history (Allows the bot to see direct messages sent to it)
    • mpim:read (Allows the bot to see a list of its group DMs)

Step 3: Install the App in Your Workspace

  1. Scroll back up on the same OAuth & Permissions page.
  2. Click the big green Install to Workspace button.
  3. Slack will show a screen asking for permission to let the bot join. Click Allow.

Step 4: Copy Your Bot Token

  1. Once you click Allow, you will be redirected back to the dashboard.
  2. You will now see a section called OAuth Tokens for Your Workspace.
  3. Look for the Bot User OAuth Token. It will always start with the letters xoxb-.
  4. Click Copy.

Step 5: Invite the Bot to a Channel

  1. Open your Slack app.
  2. Go to the channel where you want the bot to work.
  3. Type /invite @YourBotName and hit enter.

Step 6: Add Bot Token to Conviso

  1. Go to Organization Settings.
  2. Under Integration, click on Slack.
  3. Click on Add Provider.
  4. Paste the bot token and click Save.
  5. Go back to the workspace you wish to use this token in.
  6. Expand Settings on the navigation bar and click on Channels.
  7. Turn on Slack as a messaging channel.
  8. Select the token ID from the dropdown of Slack tokens.

Important: Treat this token like a bank password. Anyone who has it can control your bot. Never post it publicly or share it in a public Slack channel.

Sending via Campaigns

Since Slack is a campaign-only channel, you will add it as a step in your automation workflows.

  1. Create or edit a Campaign Workflow.
  2. Click the + (plus) icon to add a new step.
  3. From the dropdown menu, select Slack.
  1. Click Add content to open the Slack Message Editor.

Designing Your Message

The Slack editor allows you to construct messages using standard Slack formatting.

  • Message Text: The main content of your notification. You can use mrkdwn for formatting (user mentions <@U123>, bold *bold*, etc.).
  • Channel: Specify the destination channel (e.g., #alerts).

Previewing the Message

You can switch to the Preview tab to see exactly how your message will look when delivered to Slack.

Personalization

Just like other channels, you can use Liquid syntax to include user data in your Slack messages.

"New sign up: {{ email }} from {{ company }}."

Technical Notes

  • Bot Scope: Ensure the Conviso bot has been invited to any private channels you wish to post to.
